The First will Always be King. The Original Proof Silver Eagle: 1986
The Silver Eagle is one of the most coveted Silver Dollars released by the U.S. Mint in history...beginning production in 1986, Silver eagles are still minted and collected in the tens of millions annually! This first year of issue piece stands out above the rest, in large part due to its iconic position as the originator of the entire Series!
We recently got lucky and discovered a small hoard of these First-Year-of-Issue pieces from the San Francisco Mint… with each silver eagle in stunning Proof condition, still in the original government packaging more than 34 years later!
The Longest Running Silver Dollar in America: The Silver Eagle
The Silver Eagle Dollar is now America’s longest-tenured silver dollar in United States Minting history, at over 34 years old it is now even older than the fabled Morgan Dollar Series (Minted for 28 total years)! A large part of its popularity is since it hits what we like to call the “Collector's Trifecta”: it is the largest, heaviest, and purest silver coin in U.S. history.
It is struck from one full ounce of .9993 pure American silver and is even larger and heavier than the legendary Morgan Silver Dollar. The Silver Eagle's metal content is not the only reason it is famous, it is also revered for its beautiful design: The Lady Liberty wrapped in the American Flag, a scene that is considered to be one of the greatest symbols of American Freedom. The design is a true classic that was first used on Silver Half Dollars from 1916-1947.
Since its introduction in 1986, the Silver Eagle has quickly become the World's #1 Silver Dollar.
