About this Product

Thomas Jefferson Coin & Currency Set

On September 5th, 1775 a group of colonial delegates met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to discuss their response to the "Intolerable Acts," a piece of legislation enacted by the British Crown in response to the Boston Tea Party. These delegates determined that their only course of action was to fight for their freedom against the tyrannical British Empire. A small group of five men were selected to create a legal document that would let the British Crown, and the world at large, know the intentions of their new nation. The Declaration of Independence was then drafted, led by a man who would become our commander in chief just a few decades later: Thomas Jefferson himself!

What many collectors have forgotten is that he had his very-own special edition mint set produced back in 1993 honoring his lifetime of service towards our great nation. Presenting the United States Mint 1993 Jefferson Coin & Currency Set!

Did You Know? Jeffersonian Democracy favored states' rights and a strictly limited federal government.

A Man of Many Hats: Author, President, Founding Father

Our 3rd President was one of the most influential people involved in the development of our young nation. Not only was he the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, but he was also the president who led the largest land expansion in our history - the famous Louisiana Purchase (1803)!

President Kennedy said it best way back in 1962 at an event at the White House, one in which he invited 49 Nobel Prize winners... "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent and of human knowledge that has ever been gathered together at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."

Jefferson also played a major role in the development of our national currency and the establishment of the U.S. Mint. Over the years he has been commemorated on a number of regularly circulated U.S. Coins and Currency...a claim to fame only Jefferson, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin can make!

A Special Set with a very Special Nickel...

In 1993, the United States Mint celebrated the 250th anniversary of Jefferson's birth by releasing a very limited "coin & currency set." This set would be the first of its kind...the special 3 piece collection includes a special dual date (1743-1993) uncirculated 90% Silver Dollar, an uncirculated $2 Federal Reserve note from the bicentennial in 1976 (this was the 1st small sized $2 currency in U.S. History), and a VERY special 1994 dated Jefferson Nickel. While each piece of this collection is special in its own right, this Nickel is in a league of its own! The 1994 Coin & Currency Jefferson Nickel were released with a special satin finish, and was the 1st modern issue U.S. coin released with this special surface. It's a unique coin with an ultra low mintage of just 167,703, making it the 2nd lowest minted Jefferson nickel of all time! All three are displayed in a special U.S. Mint gift folder with historical reference literature.

What is a Satin Finish coin? The U.S. Mint's satin finish coins are struck on planchets that are sandblasted with a fine mixture of sand and glass beads...This gives them a distinctive appearance that is very different from regular Uncirculated and Proof coins! They are truly a collector's best friend!
