Since 1964, the Kennedy Half Dollar has been one of America's favorite coins. With a history of production almost 60 years long and still going strong, it is guaranteed at this point to be the longest running half dollar in U.S. Mint history.
With a series as long-running as this, there end up being several groups of coins that become highly sought-after with collectors -- typically coins that are the 'first' and/or 'last' of their kind in the series.
A New Era in the Kennedy Half Dollar Series
The San Francisco Mint
The Kennedy Half Dollar was commissioned to honor one of our most iconic Presidents: John F. Kennedy. When the series kicked off in 1964, the Kennedy Half Dollar was minted at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints in Uncirculated condition, with the Proof coins being struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
Production would not transition to the San Francisco Mint until 1968 -- which marked the beginning of a new era in the Kennedy Half Dollar Series!
The San Francisco Mint's primary job, starting in the 1960s, was to strike Proof coins -- and their Kennedy Half Dollars are truly breathtaking examples of the design!
With the only source for these coins being the U.S. Mint Proof Sets, building 1st-decade collections like these can be quite difficult. Most collectors don't want to break apart those sealed sets to get their hands on high quality Proof Kennedy Half Dollars because the sets themselves are getting rarer by the year!
