While regular issue silver eagles do not bear a mint mark, the U.S. Mint went out of its way to document that this coin was actually struck at the West Point Mint. It was the first time the West Point Mint ever declared a Mint Mark on a silver eagle. The West Point Mint started minting silver eagles for the first time in the year 2000, but only produced uncirculated quality coins and did not begin production of proof silver eagles until the following year.
The proof silver eagle from 2000 was minted at the Philadelphia Mint, making the 2001 West Point Proof Silver Eagle the first of its kind! All subsequent uncirculated Silver Eagles minted post-2001 were minted solely at the West Point Mint, with special supplemental mintages being produced by the San Francisco Mint periodically.
