In Honor of Today’s Special Anniversary: The Only Medal of Honor Silver Dollar!

Today, March 25th, is a special day in United States History: it is the anniversary of the famous Medal of Honor being awarded for the first time! This iconic medal is the highest award that can be given for Military Valor while in action! Originally created during the Civil War, this medal has become an iconic symbol that represents the courage, bravery, integrity, and the sacrifice of our best and brightest – the Men and Women of the U.S. Military!

In honor of today’s anniversary, we have decided to bring back the special issue silver dollar that honors this monumental piece of American Military History – the Medal of Honor Silver Dollars! While our limited supplies last, we have the stunning collectors’ edition Proof Silver Dollars still in their original government packaging!

A Military Symbol of Bravery: Immortalized in a Silver Dollar

The Medal of Honor was originally ordered to be produced by Abraham Lincoln, and in his own words it was to be presented to:

“… such noncommissioned officers and privates as shall most distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action, and other soldier-like qualities…”.

The first soldier awarded this prestigious medal was Army Private Jacob Parrott during the Civil War. A Member of the Ohio Voluntary Infantry, he took part in a 25-man raid into the Confederacy to destroy bridges and railroad tracks to hamper their supply lines. They disabled several trains and damaged a few bridges before being apprehended after their stolen train ran out of fuel. After being returned to the Union during a prisoner swap, Parrott was awarded for his bravery and ingenuity with the Medal of Honor (with the other members of the raid receiving theirs shortly after)!

The Medal of Honor silver dollar was struck by the United States Mint in 2011 and it is a truly breathtaking coin. The reverse design features an Infantryman carrying another wounded soldier to safety while under heavy enemy fire. This image reflects the selfless sacrifice and courage that all Medal of Honor recipients displayed while in combat.

The obverse of this stunning silver dollar features the three current Army, Navy, and Air Force Medals of Honor from left to right. Also included are the inscriptions “In God We Trust” “Liberty” and “Medal of Honor 1861-2011”

Did you know? The Medal of Honor is the only medal in the U.S. Military that is worn around the neck!
