About this Product
America's 1st Half Dollar - The Capped Bust
This is not one of the internationally issued colonial coins used as legal tender in the early United States. It is an official U.S. Mint issue stuck at the Philadelphia Mint, known as the Capped Bust. This first half dollar was struck between 1807 and 1839. The design is as described by the name, a capped head concept of Liberty. This design was used on all silver denominations at the time. The reverse featured a heraldic eagle with a prominent "United States of America." This was the first U.S. coin to incorporate edge lettering with the denomination, fifty cents or half dollar. This lettering helped prevent privateers from shaving small amounts of silver from each coin.

The Work Horse of Early America
These half dollars were the largest denomination coins in circulation during their time, they did all the heavy lifting! The silver dollar was only struck until 1804 and didn't appear again until 1836 with the Gobrecht Dollar. As the work horse, it was heavily circulated, and quality specimens have become difficult to find. Scarce Although, the U.S. Mint did its best to keep an ample supply of coins in circulation, it was a young government with other financial needs. It was common to encounter English and Spanish coins in circulation, and these foreign coins were declared legal tender up until the early 1850s. If you add up all the Bust Half Dollars struck by the Philadelphia Mint between 1807 and 1839 the number is very small. Consider this...the U.S. Mint struck more Kennedy half dollars in the first three months of 1964 (the last 90% silver half dollar issued for circulation) than it did over the 30 year span of the Bust Half Dollar.
