Beware of the Serpent in the Lake of Lerna: Discover the 2018 2 oz. Silver Hydra

The Pobjoy Mint prides itself in producing some of the finest collector quality coins on the market today and recently they have been on an absolute tear! Earlier this year they released the first two coins in their Mythological Creature Collection: the Siren and Minotaur. With individual mintages of just 650 pieces, collectors scrambled to get their hands on these incredibly detailed 2 oz. silver coins before they missed their chance!

For those who missed out, don't worry! We are proud to announce the newest addition to their stunning Mythological Creature series: The iconic Hydra!

The Hydra Finally Arrives

The iconic monster known as the Hydra comes from ancient Greek mythology and more specifically the story known as “The Twelve Labours of Hercules.” This tale follows the hero Hercules after he is urged by the oracle of Delphi to do penance by serving his cousin, King Eurystheus for 12 years. Over these 12 years Hercules would perform 12 individual labours all thought to have been nearly impossible feats of heroism and guile.

On just his second labour, Hercules came face to face with the Hydra that dwelled within Lake Lerna. The Hydra was a monstrous nine-headed serpent who had been terrorizing the countryside and slaughtered those who came to defeat it with its incredibly poisonous venom. When one of the Hydra’s heads was cut off, two more would take its place making it nearly impossible to slay such a monster. Luckily for Hercules, his nephew Iolaus, had a plan for this!

After decapitating each serpent head on the Hydra, Hercules had Iolaus burn the stump where the head had been. Miraculously this worked and they were finally able to stop the monster’s heads from re-growing. After dispatching with the giant crab that was sent to stop him from defeating the Hydra, Hercules used the golden sword gifted to him by the Goddess Athena, and at long last cut off the final head of the beast, victorious at long last.

The coin itself depicts the epic battle between the massive Hydra and the hero Hercules in incredibly stunning detail! In the scene Hercules has just sliced the neck of one of the Hydra’s nine heads. The giant crab is also represented on the bottom of the design attempting to move into position and attack Hercules as well!

A Mythical Creature Coin for Every Collector!

These special 2 oz. silver Hydras have what is called an "antique" finish. Each piece is struck from 2 oz. of .999 pure silver and then as the last step in the production process they use a special "antique" finish that deepens the design and truly brings the image to life! Combine this incredibly designed coin with a maximum allowed mintage of 650, and you have what the collector’s call a sleeper hit of 2018!

But wait, it gets even better! The first coin in this series, the Siren, is already retailing for well over $169 & the 2nd coin, the Minotaur is sold out everywhere (but we have 4 left available here)! While our supplies last you can get these stunning silver Hydras for the incredible price of just $159.95.
