The Buffalo Nickel was first struck in 1913 and it would last until 1938 -- but for some mints, the series actually ended the year before in 1937.

The Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints struck their final coins that year, which resulted in many collectors simply forgetting about them.

This was because all the attention at the time was being given to the Denver Mint issue the following year -- the 'True' final Buffalo Nickel for collecting purposes.

That combined with these coins' status as the workhorse of the American economy back in the 1930s and 1940s have resulted in very few coins surviving the test of time in any condition at all -- let alone beautiful Uncirculated condition!

That breaks down to just 1 in every 405 coins struck!

That is less than 0.25% of the entire mintage!

1938-D Buffalo Nickel Mintage: 7,020,000

Total Known Population Today (all grades): just 109,085

That breaks down to just 1 in every 64 coins struck!

That is less than 1.55% of the entire mintage!

And that is for any coin in any grade at all -- each and every one of these surviving Buffalo Nickels are living, breathing pieces of U.S. Mint history.
