Two Cent Piece - 1864 -1873 - Circulated

This obsolete issue - the 2 Cent piece has historical signifigance. It is the first coin in United States History to bear the motto "In God we Trust."

In 1864 the weight was changed on the Large cent, which in turn created two new coins, the small cent and the 2 cent coin. The 2 Cent is close to the weight of the original large cent. America didn't accept this change too well, thus making it one of the shortest lived coins in US History.

Compare mintage, the United States minted 45 odd million 2 cent pieces between 1864-1873, whereas in 2004 the US Mint struck 6.8 Billion cents alone!
