A U.S. Silver
Dollar honoring one of the most famous Vikings ever: Leif Erickson!
Leif Erickson is considered to be the very first European to set
foot on North American soil, making him the ‘True’ discoverer of what would
become the United States of America! He was no stranger to adventure and
discovery, starting at a young age when his Father (Erik the Red) took him to
live in Greenland after discovering and founding the first settlements on the
landmass in recorded history!
The Silver dollar produced in 2000 by the United States Mint is
truly a thing of beauty! The obverse of the coin features a stunning rendition
of Erickson in a traditional Viking helmet (no horns here!) while the reverse
features a detailed Viking Ship, similar to the one he used to sail across the
Atlantic ocean!
An Icelandic Coin Struck by the United States Mint:
The U.S. Made 1000 Kronur Coin!
The U.S. Mint also decided to do something special for the
creation of this 2pc. set – they struck an American version of the 1000 Kronur
silver coin used in Iceland! This special American-version of this coin is
something truly unique – a foreign nations coin struck in the United States at
our Mints! Outside of specific instances during World Wars and other conflicts
– this is something almost NEVER done by the U.S. Mint!
These coins feature an interpretation of the statue of Leif
Eriksson presented to the Icelandic nation in 1930 by the United States
Congress for the occasion of the 1000 year anniversary of the Icelandic
Parliment. The reverse depicts the Icelandic Coat of Arms representing the four
guardians of Iceland: an eagle, a dragon, a giant, and a bull, which guard the
north, east, south, and west of Iceland respectively!
This special 2pc. set had an incredibly small mintage of just
86,136 total sets!
