The First Peace Dollar from the Western Mint: The 1922 San Francisco Peace Dollar

There are a select few coins throughout the history of the United States Mint with a better story than the fabled Peace Dollar... and it all began with a U.S. Victory & the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28th, 1919 to mark the official end of the First World War, otherwise known as the 'Great War.'

In the aftermath of this global conflict, our nation needed a new dollar to signify the transition away from the years of bloodshed and violence that had gripped them during the world war. They needed a coin to herald in the new era of peace that was to be ushered in...and that is exactly what they decided to call the coin: The Peace!

The Peace Dollar was the final silver dollar ever produced by the United States Mint meant for everyday circulation. These iconic Silver Dollar were minted from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935. These historic and storied silver dollars were also the last of their kind ever produced by the U.S. Mint!

No Congress? No Problem!

The Peace Dollar was issued without congressional approval under the terms of the Pittman Act of 1918. The act referred to a bullion dollar being created, but did not specify the design. Coin collectors lobbied the Mint to issue a coin that memorialized the peace following World War I. Congress would not pass a bill requiring a design change (the Morgan was the last released), but they were able to persuade government officials to take action.

The original design of the Peace Dollar was in high-relief. The images of Liberty and the Majestic Eagle were created higher than traditional coins, but after only a month the design was re-worked. The coins wouldn't stack properly, creating an issue for merchants across the country. The design incorporated the word "In God We Trust" like all U.S. coins...but here the word "Trust" was spelled "Trvst" - the letter V for victory in WWI.

The New Silver Dollar from the Gold Mint!

After the government was persuaded to change the design from the Morgan to the Peace and the design was corrected, it was already 1922. Finally, three U.S. Mints were able to strike the NEW dollar - Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. The San Francisco Mint had a history in which it primarily struck gold coins, but the 'Old Granite Lady' turned a new leaf in 1922 and began production on the nation's newest silver dollar! The San Francisco "S" mint mark can be found on the reverse of the coin, below the word "One."
