Maya Angelou was a true American icon. She was a celebrated writer, performer, and civil rights activist who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many accomplishments. She was the first African American woman in U.S. History to write and present a poem at a Presidential Inauguration, and just the second poet in history to do so. Her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Signs won her international recognition and fame, and she would go on to earn over 30 honorary degrees in her lifetime.

In 2022, Maya Angelou was the first woman honored in the American Women Quarter Series when coins featuring her image were released by the United States mint. We carry a full line of Maya Angelou NGC graded, uncirculated, proof, and silver quarters from the Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco Mints.

The United States Mint recently unveiled a stunning and special edition May Angelou quarter, part of the American Women Quarters Program. A unique homage to the iconic poet and feminist, this beautiful quarter proudly depicts Maya Angelou standing alongside a butterfly on one side and George Washington on the other. The design is meant to recognize both Angelou’s life and legacy, as well as her impactful contributions to both US history and the global civil rights movement. It may be hard for some to believe that such a small coin could be so heavily packed with inspiring symbolism, yet the mint has succeeded in commemorating an extraordinary figure. This issue honors Maya Angelou, whose life continues to inspire generations.
