A Collector’s Secret from the U.S. Mint! The 1965-1967 Special Mint Set Trio!
Most will agree the finest uncirculated coins released by the US Mint each year are in the Official Uncirculated Set - otherwise known as The U.S. "Mint Set". What makes these sets so popular is that they contain every denomination issued from each mint during that calendar year...from the Cent through the Half Dollar, and in today’s sets, the Dollar.
What many collectors have forgotten is that the United States Mint did not produce any annual U.S. Mint or Proof Sets during the years 1965, 1966, and 1967! During this time the United States Mint produced a trio of ‘Special Mint Sets’ produced specifically for coin collectors!
A Production change that Changed the Game!
In 1964 the US Mint stopped making Proof Sets at the Philadelphia Mint and moved production to the San Francisco Mint. But it took the Mint 3 years to get set up, so no regular issue Mint or Proof sets were released during that timeframe. What they made instead was a special finish coin of each denomination and placed them into special U.S. Mint packaging – many collectors consider this to be the birth of our first Satin Finish Sets!!
Each set contains one Cent, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar from that year of issue and in their original government Special Mint Set packaging.
