st years are always remembered … but the Franklin had a twist … a similar twist to the Morgan Dollar. When the Morgan was introduced in 1878 only 3 of the 4 US Mints in service issued a coin … the 4th ( New Orleans ) came out in 1879. The Franklin was released into circulation by the Denver and Philadelphia Mint in 1948. The San Francisco Mint didn’t strike its 1st coin until the following year … 1949.
Uncirculated Quality
Why are Uncirculated Franklins special ?
- The Franklin was the largest coin in circulation so it circulated heavily.
- It was also the last 90% silver half dollar series in circulation. When 90% silver was pulled from circulation in 1964 it was saved …but when silver prices soared to $50 an ounce for the 1st time in the early 1980's it shouldn't be a surprise to know the Franklin was the 1st to the melting pot. So finding a coin that was set aside, and kept aside, for over almost 75 years is an achievement in its own right. Population reports show that less than 1 coin for every 10,000 struck are known in uncirculated condition today. All three of our coins are hand selected choice uncirculated specimens.
