The 2015 Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Dollar
Born in 1908, Lyndon Baines Johnson, or LBJ, was the 36th President of the United States. He assumed the position after the tragic death of John F. Kennedy. Johnson campaigned for the Democratic nomination in the 1960 Presidential Election, which, while unsuccessful, resulted in him being chosen as Kennedy's running mate. LBJ ran for a full term in the 1964 election, winning by a large margin over Republican opponent Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater. He is one of just four people to have served in both offices of the executive branch as well as in both houses of Congress.
Politically, he was strongly supported by the Democratic Party. His "Great Society" legislation centered around upholding civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, aid to education, the arts, urban and rural development, public services, and his "War on Poverty." Johnson was renowned for his domineering, sometimes abrasive personality and the "Johnson Treatment" (his aggressive coercion of powerful politicians in order to advance legislation).
While he began his presidency with widespread approval, support for LBJ declines as the public became further upset with the Vietnam War and the growing violence at home. Historians argue that Johnson's presidency marked the peak of modern liberalism in the United States after the New Deal era. He is ranked favorably by some historians because of his domestic policies.
The historic Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 with coins for George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. This is the FIRST coin program in U.S. History to honor all of America's Presidents, and it is destined to be the most popular collection in history, even BIGGER and more popular than the State Quarters!
