Constantine The Great's Most Famous Coin

One of the 1st-Ever 'Commemorative' Pieces in World History

The NGC Certified Ancient Bronze 'Sol Invictus' Hoard

Ancient Rome was a world superpower that ruled for well over 500 years -- leaving a permanent mark on both the earth and humanity as a whole. For collectors, coins struck during the reign of the Roman Empire have become more popular than ever.

Out of all the ancient Roman coins -- none are more sought after than the bronze pieces struck during the reign of their most famous ruler: Constantine the Great.

We recently came across a small hoard of ancient Roman Bronze coins struck with the rare 'Sol Invictus' Design honoring their Sun God (who Constantine himself believed was a monotheistic incarnation of Jesus Christ).

Each of these ancient Roman bronze coins are from a time-period known as the tumultuous 'Age of Chaos' -- an era of violence that saw the entire empire engulfed in the flames of war.

When it comes to collecting, two things are stressed above all others -- Quality and History

When determining the 'quality' of a coin, there are few that can analyze and grade coins better than the experts over at NGC, one of America’s most popular grading companies. When it comes to 'history', collectors typically mean one of two things: (1) is the coin now considered 'obsolete' or iconic due its significance in the history of coinage and (2) just exactly how old is the coin itself? Often times, the older the coin and the better the condition, then the better your collection.

Over the years, we have seen some really interesting pieces... but few can compare to the combination of history and quality of these certified ancient beauties left over from the Roman Empire.

That’s Right, These are Certified Authentic Coins from the Roman Empire

Rome was a massive republic that existed for over 500 years from 27 B.C. to 476 A.D. During that span, they completely dominated the planet as the largest active leaders in all things military, agricultural, and industrial. Outside of the ruins scattered throughout what is left of their massive empire, it was the coinage of Rome that had the greatest impact. They produced pieces of bronze, gold, and silver minted with the face of their emperor proudly stamped into its design and these coins were considered good legal tender throughout the entire empire.

These ancient Roman bronze coins were one of the strongest pieces of currency during their time and as such, were heavily used throughout the world. As a result of such heavy usage, finding authentic Roman bronze coinage that has not been worn flat by the passage of time is quite the chore.

Did You Know? The Roman Imperial Mints include, but are not limited to: Rome, Thessalonica, Siscia, Alexanderia, Nicodemia, Londinium (the Great London Mint), Heraclea, and Constantinopolis.

Constantine The Great's Most Impactful Coin

One of the 1st 'Christian Coins' Ever made

Out of all the coins struck in ancient Rome, the first 'special issue' pieces struck during the reign of Constantine the Great have become the most popular -- with their unique designs being some of the most well-known today among collectors.

One of the most iconic coins released during his reign was a Bronze coin he produced in-hand with the members of the new and fledgling Catholic Church and the established Roman College of Pontifices -- The Sol Invictus coin!

The design of this coin features the Roman (Pagan) God ‘Sol Invictus’ who is the personification of the Sun. He is shown in the design wearing a radiant crown and holding a globe in his hand to symbolize victory and World Rule. The Inscriptions ‘Soli Invicto Comiti’ is also found: Translated it means “ In Honor of the Unconquered Sun God, the companion of the Emperor”.

This coin was produced because during his conversion before the Battle of Milvian Bridge -- Constantine had an epiphany: his Roman god 'Sol Invictus' was in fact just a monotheistic incarnation of Jesus Christ. To Constantine "Jesus was Sol, Sol was Jesus, the Sun was the Son".

As a result this coin is considered by many to be one of the true 'First Christian Coins' ever made!

Each of these Roman pieces have been certified by NGC as being true-blue pieces of ancient
